Flag Retirement
Boy Scout Troop 53 of Maytown help a Flag Retirement
Ceremony on Sunday, October 14 near the Maytown Fire Department. Senior
Patrol Leader Peter Shaum lead the ceremony by reading a brief history of
the flag. John Coleman read a description of the proper way to retire the
flag. Ben Andrick told about the meaning of the seven red stripes and 3
white stripe. Grant Andrick informed the audience about the meaning of the
blue field and the 50 stars. In another part of the ceremony, Kevin
Rorabaugh described the significance of each of the 13 folds needed to
correctly fold the flag. Scouts Darren Bortner, Chad Eichelberger, and Casey
Hungler then demonstrated the proper folding of the American Flag. As the
flags were being retired, Chad Eichelberger and Jeffrey Bensinger took turns
reading patriotic quotes from famous Americans from Thomas Jefferson to John
Wayne. Troop 53's Fife and Drum Corp participated in the ceremony by playing
patriotic songs such as Yankee Doodle and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Troop
53 wishes to thank the Maytown Fire Department for their help with the
ceremony.

Senior Patrol Leader Peter Schaum reads a part of the script while
John Coleman, Chad Eichelberger, Jeffey Bensinger, and Darren Bortner
wait for their turn.

Kevin Rorabaugh gives the meaning of each of the 13 folds while
Casey Hungler, Chad Eichelberger, and Darren Bortner demonstrate the
proper method of folding the flag.

Peter Schaum carefully prepares the flags for retirement, while
Josiah Shelly, Dan Vuono, Kevin Rorabaugh, Matt Miller, Grant
Andrick, and Darren Bortner do their part in the ceremony.
Troop 53 plans to hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony annually. We collect faded and damaged flags from Elizabethtown, Marietta, Maytown, and Mount Joy. Anyone who has some flags that need retired may contact Scoutmaster Mark Rorabaugh
