Troop 53 Maytown returns from Winter Camping Weekend: Plans Winter and Spring Season
Boy Scout Troop 53 of Maytown just returned from a weekend at Camp Bashore located near Fort Indiantown Gap.
Twenty-one scouts and seven leaders took part in the weekend activities, January 12-14th.. At this annual Troop 53 event, scouts always look forward to making their own "hobo stoves" to cook Saturday breakfast and lunch. The Saturday evening dinner of roast beef and ham was slow-cooked over an open fire. Scouts occcupied their free time with "touch" football -- several leaders were clearly tackled -- and after-dark games of glow frizbee and capture the flag. Inside the cabin a number of board games were popular. In previous years the troop took sleds and other snowsport equipment, but this year temperatures remained well above freezing.
The troop will ski at Ski Roundtop while camping at nearby at Camp Tuckahoe the weekend of March 2-3, 2006. The Troop 53 Fife and Drum Corps is also anticipates attending some weekend Civil War reenactments. Other events are also scheduled including all-night bowling.
Troop 53 will attend summer camp the week of June 17-22 at Camp Rodney, Maryland. While the camp has all the activites generally expected at summer camp -- supervised target shooting with qualified instructors, swimming, hiking, and crafts. Rodney excels in its water sports program on the Cheaspeake Bay, including motor boating, sailing, kayaking and water skiing. Rodney also has a highly touted "Black Hawk" high adventure program for older scouts. Members of Troop 53 who attended camp last year will also attest to the honor of sharing their campsite, "Windy Point," with a family of bald eagles who used the site as their perch to overlook the bay.

Patrick Cassidy of Maytown, Alex Flick, John Coleman and Peter Schaum, all of Mount Joy, display their approval of Saturday night dinner at their winter campout.
